Laws of UX — Cognitive Laws for Interface Decisions

Operationalizes the named psychological laws most useful in interface work: Hick, Fitts, Jakob, Miller, Tesler, Peak-End, Serial Position, Von Restorff, Aesthetic-Usability, Goal-Gradient. Where Krug and NN/g give practice, this pack gives the quantified *why* — useful when a design argument needs more than taste.

Principios

  • · Cut options that serve <5% of users from primary surfaces; disclose progressively.
  • · Chunk long option sets into labeled groups — grouping resets the comparison space.
  • · Highlight a recommended option; a good default converts a choice into a confirmation.
  • · Never apply to expert surfaces reflexively: familiar choice sets are scanned, not deliberated (Hick's weakens with practice).
  • · Onboarding: one decision per screen beats a settings wall.

Patrones

  • · Count options at each decision point of the main flow; >5 undifferentiated → group, default, or cut.
  • · Every choice screen gets one recommended/default option unless choices are genuinely equipotent.
  • · Settings pages: bury rarely-changed options; surface the 3 people actually change.
  • · If analytics show hesitation (long dwell before click) at a step → Hick audit first.
  • · The most frequent action per screen: biggest and nearest target; audit primary flows for tiny/far frequent buttons.

  • [ ] Most frequent action per screen: largest + nearest of its group; touch minimums met. (LX3, LX5)
  • [ ] Destructive actions: never largest/nearest/default-focused. (LX4)
  • [ ] Standard objects follow convention, or deviation is justified in writing. (LX7)
  • [ ] No screen requires recall from a previous screen. (LX8)
  • [ ] Flows ≥3 steps show honest progress. (LX11)
